The future of the Oakland Unified School District is on hold, waiting for a decision from California’s governor.

The OUSD was placed under state receivership since 2003 because of a large deficit. A piece of state legislation to return the district to local control, AB 45, passed last week and was delivered to Gov. ArnoldSchwarzenegger. However, the governor has not yet said whether he will sign it.

On September 14, 2007, Oakland Unified School District State Administrator Kimberly Statham tendered her resignation. Vincent Matthews was appointed interim State Administrator.

Is the district ready for local control or is it too early?
